Soaps will always be presents in a person's home. Everyone has always been dependent on soaps when it comes to cleaning, making it a necessity for all of us. These soaps that we use for cleaning are actually made from fats and oils. Soaps are basically used for cleaning a lot of things -our bodies, clothes, dishes and most of the things that we use at home.

The process of making soaps from raw materials is called soap making. The scientific term of actually mixing all of the ingredients is saponification. Saponification involves mixing the fats and oils with alkali to create a sodium or potassium salt. The soaps that we use are able to clean the dirt from any surface because it can trap the dirt inside it. The soap wraps around the dirt allowing it to be soluble in water. When the soap is washed off, the soap plus the dirt comes with it too.

The products of soap making are commonly known as handmade soaps. These kinds of soaps are slightly different from the commercially available soaps that we are used to. Handmade soaps are usually gentler on the skin. Since there will always be excess amount of fats which is added into the soap base, this results into moisturizing soaps. What happens during superfatting is that the glycerin is left into the mixture. This is why handmade soaps are basically friendly when it comes to the skin.

There are actually different kinds of soap making processes. These are the cold process, hot process and the melt & pour process. There are certain advantages and disadvantages that these methods have. The cold process is done by slightly melting the mixture to liquefy it and maintain it at that temperature. The hot process of soap making involves heating the soap mixture to a higher temperature. For the melt & pour process, there is a pre-made mixture which is melted and poured into the mold.

Most of the materials of soap making are available in local groceries. You can just get these soap making materials and start working on them. What makes this activity very appealing for the people is the fact that you can personalize your soaps. There are so many additives that you can add to your soap so that you can enjoy using them. You can add color, fragrance, moisturizers, exfoliants and a lot more. Just be creative when it comes to making your soaps. There are certain precautionary measures that must be taken when handling soap mixtures Especially with the use of lye, these soap mixtures can burn the skin. Please be careful whenever adding lye to the water and mixing it. You should always wear gloves, goggle and an apron when making soaps. Knowing that you are safe will make soap making a lot more fun!
